Working from home deduction

Tax Time Toolkit – Working from home deduction

We have outlined working from home deduction changes that are coming into place for the 2023 year.

For the 2023 Tax year and onwards the ATO has changed the way individuals will be allowed to claim your Working from home deductions.  If you are intending to claim a deduction for working from home against your Salary and Wage income, please ensure you read the attached Tax Time brochure.

There are also new record keeping requirements for evidence to support your working from home claim.  From 1st March 2023 you will need to keep a record of all hours worked.  Up to 28th February you will still be able to rely on a 4 week logbook/diary to apportion your claim.  You no longer require a dedicated office space in the home.

Eligibility to claim:

To claim working from home expenses, you must:

  • be working from home to fulfil your employment duties, not just carrying out minimal tasks, such as occasionally checking your emails or taking phone calls.
  • incur additional running expenses as a result of working from home.
  • keep records that show you incur these expenses, ie. utility bills.
